About Gundert Bungalow

The Gundert Bungalow stands on a hill at Illikkunnu in Thalassery. The German missionary and scholar Hermann Gundert lived and worked here in the mid-1800s, and it was in this house that he compiled the first Malayalam-English dictionary and a Malayalam grammar, and helped start one of the earliest Malayalam newspapers.

For anyone interested in the language and its history, this is where a lot of it was first written down.
